FIRST Rule of Delegation (it’s not what you think)

You hired a graphic designer to create an “awesome flyer” and when you got it back, you were massively disappointed and decided a 3rd grader could have done a better job.

They apparently suck and now you need to hire someone else.

Or how about this…

Your new admin is having trouble processing a new membership. You already showed them how to do it… so why in the world can’t they remember!?

UGH… why can’t they JUST FIGURE IT OUT like you would if you forgot something?!

Or how about this…

You asked your coach to get “before and after measurements” for your challenge, but when you go to analyze the results, you realize a handful of pictures and measurements were never collected and now it’s TOO LATE.

Here’s the thing…

It wasn’t the graphic designers fault the flyer wasn’t exactly what you wanted…. because “mind-reading” was not on their list of skill sets when you hired them.

It wasn’t the admin’s fault they couldn’t remember how to process a new membership, because there wasn’t a video or step-by-step document you created to reference how it’s done.

It’s not the coaches fault that measurements slipped through the cracks, because there was no “checks and balances” system in place to make sure that every single client was accounted for.

See where I’m going with this?

Here’s my first rule of delegation…. you have to TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

I see it all the time…. business owners give someone on their team a task, and then pray to the delegation gods that it’ll get done on time and to your standards….

But if you’ve been in business for more than a day, you’ll know that this is a recipe doomed for failure.

In fact, a couple of years ago, I almost lost my best and most loyal team member that I’ve ever had because I didn’t own up to my sh$$. I ASSUMED too much. I didn’t take enough personal responsibility.

It wasn’t their fault. It was the fact that I never took the responsibility that I needed to… and that was the root of the problem.

If you play the blame game, NOTHING will ever get done.

You’ll end up churning and burning coaches, admins, VA’s, graphic designers, etc… that are probably all great at what they do…. UNDER THE RIGHT LEADERSHIP.

It all starts with taking personal responsibility FIRST.

So that’s my #1 rule for delegation (and life).

And it’s a very empowering rule.

Once you own it, you can change ANYTHING that you want to.

Excited to share my second rule tomorrow where we’ll start getting into the nitty gritty.

Make it an awesome day,
Alicia 🙂
